About the creation of
www.APRSfl.net....
|
APRSfl.net was started just shortly
after January of 2004 after both Sean (originally KG4YZZ, now N4SCF) and Dave
(KG4YZY) became licensed amateur radio operators. Getting licensed was
something we should have done earlier in life, and even at that it took
our friend Ralph (originally KG4YZX, now K4NUT) to prod us into going down
and taking the test. We actually think he didn't want to take the test
alone at first, hence why he insisted we all go together. Since we all
work in a microwave radio business, all studying was for the
rules, not the technology for us.
Even before we became licensed, we had always had a very strong interest in
meteorology. We actually had all of our personal weather stations on the APRS-IS
(internet based APRS) thru the Citizens Weather Observer Program almost a full
year before we became licensed amateur operators. We've have our
weather pages on the web for years before that via Virtual Weather Station.
Our interest in APRS and weather have continued to grow,
as the content of our website reflects. We've given
presentations to
numerous local amateur radio clubs and the Tampa chapter of the AMS as
well. If you would like us to present at your organization about APRS or
Nexrad radar systems, let us know. We're definately
what you would call amateur meteorologists. Strange hobby, we
know, but in Florida.... Need we say more?
The goal of the site is to have the
latest real time data and pertinant information about APRS and local weather available to anyone interested.
Alot of the content is 100%
unique to our site. We take pride that we offer this service free to the community and present it 100% advertisement free.
We've been a part in just a few
short years in some great projects, helped develop some new standards, and
the biggest point, we've made alot of great friends thru our hobbies.
We both work with the NWS in Ruskin on a regular basis helping
out by providing real time data and information to them as well as our time when needed.
Sean was also a recipient of the
2005 NOAA Environmental Heros award
for 125+ hours spent manning the NWS Ruskin Amateur station during the
2004 hurricane season for Skywarn along with two other operators that year.
Aside from weather,
we both also sit on the board of directors for the West Central Florida Group,
the owners and operators of the regional linked NI4CE repeater system.
Sean is currently the Vice President and Dave is the lead Engineer of the system. The
system recently grew once again in May 2006, we now have 8 repeaters at 5 sites covering
13 counties in West Central Florida.
We're always looking for suggestions to add to the site, so feel free to drop us a line.
